Mature size: A low, spreading shrub to 16 inches tall, 2 to 3 feet wide. Fast growing shrub that is quick to flower so cold climates usually enjoy this tropical as an annual.
Dense, lemon yellow flower heads are numerous florets that sit atop leathery, dark green ovate leaves, flowers continuously from spring until the frost. Prune in early spring as new growth begins to emerge.
Dr. Mike Dirr selection is a cross between 'Miss Huff' and 'New Gold'. Has the hardiness of 'Miss Huff' and the spreading habit of 'New Gold'. Exceptionally cold hardy variety, with established plants having survived 0 Fahrenheit.
Lantana is very easy to grow and will adapt to most soil types. Well drained soil is preferred. Too much water and fertilizer will reduce bloom.
Use as a groundcover in mass plantings and banks, in containers or even as a hedge or in xeriscape gardens. A very versatile plant, plus it is a butterfly and hummingbird magnet. Deer and rabbit resistant, tolerates salt spray and can be used in beach plantings. Plant in the spring and water as needed during the first growing season, thereafter it is considered heat and drought tolerant. |
