Description
Schizachyrium scoparium 'Prairie Blues' (30)ct Ellepots
Common Name: Grass-Ornamental, Little Bluestem
Zone 3 to 9, Full sun.
Plants reach 3 feet tall and 18 inches wide.

Little Bluestem is a native prairie grass that is said to have originated in Missouri. It can be found in the wild as far north as Quebec, east to Maine, south to Florida, and west to Arizona. Once one of the most characteristic grasses of American tallgrass praries, Little Bluestem is now the official state grass of Nebraska.

'Prairie Blues' is an improved selection of the native bluestem. It offers a more consistent grey-blue foliage color that is quite striking in the garden. The narrow, upright leaves take on reddish-orange tones in the fall. Fluffy silver seed heads appear in late summer and last well into fall.

This grass is terrific in a border or meadow setting. It needs full sun and is tolerant of heat and humidity. Schizachyrium is a great choice if you are looking to restore an eroded site, or for a plant that will grow in hot, dry areas where other plants have a hard time surviving.

Schizachyrium can grow in either acidic or alkaline soils, and can tolerate a range of moisture conditions including average to extremely dry. It does not need to be fertilized. It's a good idea to cut this grass back to ground level in late fall in order to have a sturdier plant the coming year.

Attributes: Border plants, Drought Tolerant, Mass planting, Deer resistant.

The Ellepot System is a method of growing in a peat media filled paper tube. Ellepots are environmentally friendly and decompose in the garden.

An Ellepot is a root permeable, biodegradable paper sleeve, instead of plastic. It is beneficial to plant development as root system does not spiral, and natural root development is encouraged.

Guidelines for Handling and Transplanting Elle Plugs

1) We strive to send every Elle plug with sufficient moisture to last through shipping. Upon delivery of your order, inspect all Elle plugs for soil moisture.
2) Water any plugs that appear to be dry immediately. If the Elle paper is dry, then the plug is drying out. All plugs arrive with the addition of a wetting agent to facilitate prompt, even water absorption.
3) If the Elle plugs are to be held for a period of time before transplanting, check the plugs regularly to ensure they are evenly moist. Do not let plugs dry out.
4) Just before transplanting, re-check moisture level of all plugs scheduled to be transplanted. Ensure that plugs are thoroughly moist.
