Phlox 'Minnie Pearl' (25) plants
a/k/a garden phlox, summer phlox, perennial phlox, or autumn phlox
Zone 3 to 8. Full sun to partial shade. Plants reach 15 to 20 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, dwarf (?), upright, clump-forming.
Clusters of large, pure white flowers completely cover the glossy, green foliage from early to late summer. In warmer zones, may bloom in April, long before the paniculatas. The relatively short plants spread slowly to form a 2 foot wide clump in about 3 years.
'Minnie Pearl' was discovered growing along the roadside in Mississippi. Thought to be a naturally occurring hybrid of P. maculata x P. glaberrima, though it has an upright habit like paniculatas, 'Minnie Pearl' has almost unbelievable disease resistance.
Phlox paniculata grow well in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Rich, moist, organic soil and mulch are beneficial as it is intolerant of drought. Phlox paniculata is unequaled for showy blooms over a long period throughout the summer. Though they are some of the most popular perennials available, they do require some maintenance to sustain their health and vigor.
Deadheading faded flower panicles may prolong blooms into early fall. Attracts birds and butterflies. A garden mainstay, excellent for perennial borders, mass planting, corners and for cut flowers. Phlox is a member of the Polemoniaceae family and is native from New York to Georgia, and west to Arkansas and Illinois. |
