Phlox paniculata grow well in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Rich, moist, organic soil and mulch are beneficial as it is intolerant of drought.

Deadheading faded flower panicles may prolong blooms into early fall. Their fragrance attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Phlox is a member of the Polemoniaceae family and is native from New York to Georgia, and west to Arkansas and Illinois.
