Pennisetum alopecuroides (20)ct Flat Common Name: Grass-Ornamental, Fountain Grass
Zone 5 to 9, Full sun
Plants reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide.
Soft panicles cascade from arching stems beginning in midsummer and are reddish brown. As the flowers mature, they turn to tan.
The finely textured, glossy, bright green leaves are especially lovely when backlit by the early morning or late afternoon sun. As fall arrives, the foliage becomes streaked with gold and fades to the color of straw in winter. It provides exceptional winter interest.
Pennisetum prefers to be grown in rich loamy soil with good drainage and full sun or light shade. However, it will grow in rocky or sandy soil as long as it remains fairly moist. This grass resents having "wet feet". This clumping grass works most effectively in mass plantings, but also can be used as an accent plant in gardens and in containers. This species may be propagated by seed or division.
