Dicentra 'King of Hearts' (25) plants
Common Name: Bleeding Heart- Fern-leaved; Western Bleeding Heart.
Zones 5 to 9; Full sun to full shade. Mature size 8 to 10 inch height, spreads 12 inches. Herbaceous perennial.
Bright rose, heart-shaped flowers appear from late spring into fall, over lacy, soft blue-green foliage. Unlike the Old Fashioned Bleeding Heart, 'King of Hearts' will not go dormant in midsummer, as long as the soil is kept moist. Flowers may continue throughout the summer in northern zones. In southern zones flowers may slow or stop in summer heat, with a possible rebloom in late summer to early fall.
Though this species is sun tolerant, Dicentra is most at home in woodland settings. It likes rich, loose soil that is evenly moist but also well-drained. At planting time, add lots of compost, humus, or peat moss to the soil to enhance its water retention capabilities. Plants will not grow well in heavy clay soils and are intolerant of wet soils in winter.
Dicentra should be planted in locations that are protected from high winds and early frosts, such as the edges of woodlands or on the north or east sides of buildings. This is a sterile hybrid that must be propagated vegetatively.
Use this long bloomer as border plants, containers, for cut flowers, for edging, and in mass plantings. Attracts hummingbirds. Deer resistant. |
