Dianthus deltoides 'Zing Rose' (30)ct Flat
Common Name: Pinks-Maiden
Zones 3 to 9.
Full sun to part shade.
Plants reach 6 to 8 inches tall and 9 to 12 inches wide; Herbaceous perennial groundcover. Growth rate: Moderate. D. deltoides is one of the most aggressive Dianthus species, and if allowed to form seed, it will self-sow freely.
Deep rose-red blossoms cover the dense, somewhat upright clump of dark green, evergreen foliage. Each of the 5 flower petals have serrated edges, looking as if they have been trimmed with pinking shears, hence the common name 'Pinks'. If deadheaded, this species will flower heaviest in early summer with a rebloom in the fall. In the cooler seasons, the leaves of this cultivar tend to take on purplish-red tones and then turn green again in spring.
Dianthus grow best in loose, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Lime can be added to the soil if it is naturally acidic to raise the pH. Dianthus can be grown in full sun or part shade, but the foliage will not be as lush and fewer flowers will be produced if it is grown in hot, dry areas. Regular watering during prolonged dry spells will be necessary. However, once established, they are quite drought tolerant.
A clean-up in the fall helps prevent pest and disease problems. In colder zones, adding a layer of mulch will protect the evergreen foliage. At first sign of spring, remove mulch to prevent crown rot.
Excellent as a border plant, Container, in mass or containers, as cut flower or foliage, salt tolerant; fragrant flowers attract butterflies. Deer resistant. |
