Moderate growth, Herbaceous compact, clump-forming perennial.
Native woodland perennial forms a sizable multi-stemmed clump of soft blue-green astilbe-like foliage and is similar to Cimicifuga in habit. A dependable, low maintenance, long-lived perennial once established. In late spring to early summer, small clusters of white flowers are produced just above the foliage. These flowers develop into panicles of showy white fruits which are borne on red pedicels in autumn for 4 to 6 weeks.
Actaea is easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil and performs best in organically rich, evenly moist soil. Soil should not be allowed to dry out, but not be constantly wet. Self-seeding may occur.
The fruits of this plant are extremely poisonous if ingested, avoid planting this species in areas frequented by young children.
