Upright spikes of violet-blue flowers shaped like a little hood, thus its common name, monkshood. Aconitum is one of the few blue flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. Deeply divided, dark green, glossy foliage.
Monkshood should be planted in moist, humus rich soil, with generous amounts of compost and peat moss to give it a slight acidity. Aconitum prefers to be grown in partial shade, it will tolerate full sun with lots of moisture. Dry soil leads to stunting of plant growth. Plants multiply from a central crown and may be divided in spring or fall. Aconitums are highly resistant to diseases and pests, partially because they are . When handling Aconitum wear gloves.
