Description
Aconitum napellus (25) plants
Common Name: Monkshood, Wolfsbane
Zones 4 to 8.
Partial sun to part shade.
Plants reach 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide;
Clump habit. Growth rate: Moderate.

Upright spikes of violet-blue flowers shaped like a little hood, thus its common name, monkshood. Aconitum is one of the few blue flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. Deeply divided, dark green, glossy foliage.

Monkshood should be planted in moist, humus rich soil, with generous amounts of compost and peat moss to give it a slight acidity. Aconitum prefers to be grown in partial shade, it will tolerate full sun with lots of moisture. Dry soil leads to stunting of plant growth. Plants multiply from a central crown and may be divided in spring or fall.

Aconitums are highly resistant to diseases and pests, partially because they are very poisonous. When handling Aconitum wear gloves. Do not plant it near vegetable gardens or where small children play. Ingestion of any part of the plant may prove fatal. All parts of Aconitum are poisonous, especially the roots.

Excellent as a border plant, in mass or containers, as cut flower or foliage. Deer and rabbit resistant.
